I arrived in Kuala Lumpur at 7 am after an 8 hour red eye flight in which I slept maybe 20 minutes. I had a 17 hour layover before heading to Australia, and then New Zealand. My first priority was sleep. I found a spa in which napping was possible, and did the best I could, but honestly I don’t think I slept more than 20 minutes. Anyway, I had a good few hours of food and hot tubs, steam rooms and general relaxation.
After a few hours I decided to try to go to Batu Caves, which is a massive cave with beautiful rock formations and monkeys living in it. I ubered there and took notice of the fact that I was in a third world country for the first time in my life. At the entrance is a gigantic staue of the god Murugan, a Hindu god of war. MASSIVE. It was 90 degrees that day and I got to the edge of the caves where you walk up a steep steep stairway with no shade. Halfway up there is a waterfall on one side of the mountain and you begin to see monkeys playing with people, trying to get food and wearing leis.
Once you get into the cave, you realize the scale of it is not done justice by the images you see online. I felt like Indiana Jones, but not really, because like 100 other tourists were in the place. There are monkeys all over, like inches from your feet or your face, always always trying to get your food. It was quite a spectacular sight.
I climbed down and took a taxi back to the spa where I left my sweater, and then ubered to the airport. Luckily, that night I had a window seat, and an empty seat next to me, so I actually slept.
